WHO Is identi.ca?

identi.ca is a free and open-source social networking and micro-blogging service.

WHAT THEY DO?

identi.ca is based on the pump.io software, that uses the Activity Streams protocol and does most of what people want from a social network. The website allows unlimited length status updates, rich text, and images.

HOW THEY WORK?

Identi.ca stopped accepting new registrations in 2013. However, it continues to operate alongside several other pump.io-based hosts. Pump.io is a decentralized social network with servers where users can pick where to sign up for an account, and communicate with Pump users from any other public Pump.io server.

By use of Identi.ca site users get unlimited length status updates, rich text, and images. As well, the Activity Streams protocol provides many kinds of activities such as games.

HISTORY:

On July 2, 2008, Identi.ca was launched and received more than 8,000 registrations and 19,000 updates in 24 hours.

On November 4, 2008, Identi.ca reached its 1,000,000th notice.

In January 2009, identi.ca received investment funds from venture capital group Montreal Start-Up.

In May 2009, Identi.ca became part of a hosted microblogging service called status.net.

In December 2012, registration on Identi.ca was closed in preparation for the switch to pump.io software.

On July 12, 2013, identi.ca switched to pump.io software.
