Even as a college student, Dr. Singh showed a penchant for leadership. Throughout his four years at Valparaiso, he held positions including Student Senator, Chair of the Health Advisory Committee, Ombudsman, and eventually was elected President of the student body in his senior year. He frequently spoke out about issues affecting the student body and was awarded the school’s Outstanding Leadership and Service award in recognition of his contributions to the university community.

He was a member of the Panther Reconnaissance Unit. He was captain of the High School Golf Team and graduated with full JROTC military honors as 2nd Lieutenant. Legislation was introduced and Ronald Regan signed it into law. It was later overturned, but Ravi and his family did not give up trying. At last, an exception was made and he was allowed to graduate with full military honors by the Secretary of Defense.

His father Dr. Pavitar Singh immigrated from Burma after the 1962 Burmese military coup d'état. He then pursued a career in medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and then eventually Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora, Illinois. His mother Rani Kaur Singh immigrated from Ranchi, India. Ravi was the first grandchild to be born in the USA from Sadar Ranbir Chowdry and Sadar Pheule Singh.
