I met Judy Baar Topinka, the llinois State Treasurer, at the State Fair in 1995. I was teaching a farmer how to use the Internet. She took one look at me and said, "We could use you in community relations in Chicago." By 1996, I was heading her Community Department, working with community leaders and speaking on her behalf at various functions . A large part of being useful in public service is getting noticed. And nothing is more noticeable than a guy with a turban. Soon, everybody knew me as the liaison to the State Treasurer's office.
