Gravatar is a service that provides globally unique avatars for users based on their email address. Users can register an account on Gravatar and upload an image that will be associated with their email address. Gravatar also allows users to create a public profile with links, photos, contact info, and other details. Gravatar is integrated with many websites and platforms that support avatars, such as WordPress, GitHub, Slack, and more. Gravatar was created by Tom Preston-Werner in 2007 and is owned by Automattic.
Gravatar refers to the image that follows people from site to site appearing beside their name when they comment or post on a blog. Gravatar works on applications like WordPress, which has built-in support for Gravatar. Avatars help users identify their posts on blogs and web forums.
To get Gravatar’s is simple and free. One just needs to sign-up with the email that they use the most often to comment on different websites. After sign-up, add an avatar of yourself. Users can add a picture of themselves, the company’s logo, or anything unique. The image can only be added once for free. Every time you leave a comment on a site that supports Gravatar with the email you used, the site will pull their Globally Recognized Avatar from Gravatar servers. Then the picture you uploaded will be shown next to the comment you left.
In most cases, WordPress themes come with Gravatar integration with comments, and if it is missing, make sure to add it. Ensure that the site you use provides users with avatars.
To make your profile private, go to the top of your browser window, click on My Profile, then click on the blue link to the right labeled View Profile and Select Hide My Profile. Use Gravatars on your site. They increase your traffic. Gravatars help develop relationships between bloggers and visitors, especially for those who regularly comment on a post.
