WHO IS TripAdvisor?
Tripadvisor is world's largest travel platform.
WHAT THEY DO?
Tripadvisor operates a website and mobile app with user-generated content and offers online hotel reservations as well as bookings for transportation, lodging, travel experiences, and restaurants. It’s the world's largest travel platform and helps 463 million travelers each month make every trip their best.
HOW THEY WORK?
The Tripadvisor app is free for use to all users. Once signed, users/clients could post reviews about a place they visited, and the business can view and respond to reviews. To access reviews, one goes to the reviews page, clicks on the title of the review, and they are directly taken to the page where the review was published. TripAdvisor uses a popularity algorithm for ranking businesses. Popularity Ranking is based on the quality, recency, and quantity of reviews received from users. TripAdvisor bubble ratings provided by users as part of their reviews are also to rank the quality of the experience at each business.
BEST PRACTICE:
You can keep track of your business performance via the popularity algorithm technology, which is designed to provide a statistical measure of confidence about the current experience at a business. This is a good measure of how your business is performing and a chance to make necessary changes.
Always have fresh or updated photos; they could inspire and motivate your guests.
Always update your amenities to differentiate yourself from competitors. Ensure that all renovations and improvements are updated for customers to see.
To engage more with your potential customers, and assure them you listen to their voice, make sure to respond to reviews. There is a chance that people will visit your hotel if they notice that you responded to most of your customer reviews.
Take advantage of Tripadvisor’s feature for promoting your status. Your hotel can be awarded honors such as "Travelers Choice” and "Excellent Hotel" based on past reviews.

In May 2007, TripAdvisor acquired Smarter Travel Media, operator of SmarterTravel.com, BookingBuddy.com, SeatGuru.com, TravelPod.com, and Travel-Library.com. the same month, TripAdvisor acquired The Independent Traveler, Inc
In February 2008, TripAdvisor acquired Holiday Watchdog, a U.K user-generated travel site.
In April 2008, TripAdvisor acquired Airfarewatchdog.
In July 2008, the company acquired Virtualtourist.
In April 2009, Tripadvisor launched in China.
In July 2011, TripAdvisor acquired Where I've Been, a Chicago-based Facebook app.

In February 2020, TripAdvisor changed to Tripadvisor. They used small letter ‘a’ in place of capital ‘A’.
TIPS:
Distribute Tripadvisor Comment Cards to encourage more reviews from guests. The Comment Cards are available for free.
Hotels and guests should know that sharing reviews while in the hotel is considered fraudulent. Reviews should be shared after services.
