BlackPlanet is an African-American social networking service for matchmaking and job postings. The platform also has forums for discussion on political and social issues. The site is dedicated to connecting and informing the African-American community.
Initially, BlackPlanet was designed as a platform where African-American professionals can network. BlackPlanet has evolved and now works just like any other social media site.
BlackPlanet is a mixture of play, work and social interaction platform. Users can read other users’ blogs, watch music videos, chat, flirt, look for new careers and discuss current events. To access any of the sections, however, all BlackPlanet users are required to create their own personal page. Users can create up to 3 different pages on BlackPlanet.
BlackPlanet was launched on September 1, 2001 by Omar Wasow.
Launched in 1999, BlackPlanet was a relative latecomer to social media sites, since there were already three sites targeting the African-American community that were launched.
In January 2007, BlackPlanet's had 15.8 million registered users.
In 2009, BlackPlanet introduced new features such as Facebook-style status update, as well as a news bar to keep users up-to-date with information.
In early 2010, BlackPlanet launched a new homepage with an Activity Feed, to allow users to see updates from other people on BlackPlanet.
