Miller, C. C. (2010, June 18). Sports fans break records on Twitter. Retrieved from https://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/18/sports-fans-break-records-on-twitter/

In this article, Miller explores the power of Twitter as an interactive social site and an informational resource. When Twitter was founded, the author notes that many people wondered whether the digital platform would attract many users like other platforms such as Facebook. However, in less than five years, the user base of Twitter had dramatically increased to more than 90 million. The company boasted of nearly 65 million tweets sent on average per day, an equivalent of almost 750 messages sent per second. Notably, during the 2010 World Cup, the popularity of the site among sports fanatics was evident. When Japan scored against Cameroon in the World Cup, soccer fans created a new record of tweeting 2,940 posts per second. This article shows that Twitter can be extremely useful as a source of information and an interaction site. Hence, social media leaders can capitalize on such capabilities of the platform to create and enhance their social power.
