Recently, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic challenged Twitter asking them to ban him from the platform. This followed the move by Twitter to name several media outlets under the president as state-affiliated. He said “I can’t wait for them (Twitter) to close my account so I become another Trump in the world.” By labelling the media outlets as state affiliated, the platform means that the state exercises control over the editorial content, political pressure, through financial resources, and controlling production and distribution of information. Vucic asked who Twitter expects the platforms to cooperate with if not the government. The president went ahead to congratulate the news outlets that were labeled by Twitter, telling them that they are “spreading the freedom loving idea.” Vucic stated that the Twitter on the accounts is nothing but censorship.
