National Archives Can’t Resurrect Trump’s Tweets

Forgey. Q. (2021). National Archives can’t resurrect Trump’s tweets, Twitter says. Politico: https://www.politico.com/news/2021/04/07/twitter-national-archives-realdonaldtrump-479743

The author of this article reports the current situation of Donald Trump’s Twitter ban. In January 2021, Donald Trump’s Twitter account was banned with reasons that his tweets encouraged the January 6 incident when pro-Trump rioters attacks the US capital. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) have moved forward with the plan of having Donald Trump’s Twitter account and the tweets be archived in an official online archive as the 45th president of the US. NARA has already done this with the government officials from the Trump administration. However, the archived tweets have been kept in a way that people can still interact with the tweets. However, Twitter stated their position on NARA’s plan indicating that Donald Trump’s Twitter account will remain banned and no tweet will be seen from the platform again. Therefore NARA can archive Trump’s tweets but they will not be hosted by Twitter, posing a challenge on whether they would be displayed the same way other tweets from the Trump administration have be organized. Twitter decision has raised concerns on powers of Big Tech companies in regulating freedom of speech in the country. The author also notes that Donald Trump has not taken any measures to restrict access to the archived tweets.
